The Boy Who Destroyed the Children's Castle — Part 4: Before the First Strike

Three days after Sophie came out of the castle, Emily returned to the children's center while it remained closed.

An investigator walked beside her while Nina Alvarez waited near the damaged plywood.

Nina was the staff member who had stopped when Carter ordered someone to take Noah outside.

Nina said she had spent three nights separating what she actually saw from what she now suspected.

On the morning of the charity event, Nina arrived before the doors opened and found the queue line assembled near reception.

Every heavy post stood there with a velvet rope clipped between it and the next.

Nina watched Carter unclip one post with her own hands.

Carter lifted its weighted base, carried it across the play floor, and placed it beside the castle's north wall.

Nina did not carry it, suggest the location, or touch it after Carter set it down.

She asked whether the guest line had been moved.

Carter told her to leave the post where it was and return to the pickup desk.

Emily stopped beside the round black mark the base had left near the damaged panel.

At reception, a pale circle showed where that same base had shielded the floor from ordinary shoe marks.

A short rubber scuff crossed the open floor between the two positions.

The marks could not explain a purpose, but Nina's account established who changed the post's position and when.

The investigator asked Nina what Carter had said about Noah before guests arrived.

Nina said Carter had reminded both staff members that Emily had complained to the board after an earlier incident.

Carter described Noah as unpredictable and told them to intervene quickly if his behavior changed.

Then she gave one instruction Nina could repeat without guessing at its meaning.
